The Handout
May 2000 Good Samaritan Council No. 6175 "The Council with a Heart"
Grand Knight's Message
Dear Brother Knights: I trust everyone had a wonderful Easter. The weather was beautiful, and the Dzombarís enjoyed all of it. It was definitely a time for reflection and rejuvenation. And now it is time for each of us to reflect upon how we should proceed as individuals, as families, and as a fraternity of families within our Council. We must all make decisions as to which goals we aspire, and how to fruitfully use our time to achieve our personal goals. Hopefully, more brother Knights will resolve to do more for our Council and each other with their charitable contribution of time and service. Our Councilís needs remain great. A few brothers and their families are doing most of the work trying to keep things going and our financial position afloat. Much greater success is possible if we all work together. Currently, our most important needs are filling the upcoming openings of officer and director positions within the Council and board positions on the Compass and Anchor Board. As of this writing, the office of Warden is still open. This is a vitally important position that must be filled. It is the first of the four chair officers. Chair officers being the normal progression through our leadership positions. Also, very few Director positions are filled for next year. These all need to be manned. Unfortunately, this past year, a few of our Director positions were vacant and some of the Council officers charitably absorbed additional responsibilities. In an effort not to overburden those who work hard for all of us, please step up and lead or volunteer to help. Elections of Council Officerís will occur at our May 20th meeting. Those members who desired office have met with the nominating committee and those chosen have been slated for elections. Please see the names of slated members running for office inside this handout. If you feel that you should be a part of the leadership team for this Council and have not been slated, please consider "running off the floor". Additionally, if the nominating committee cannot fill a full slate of officers, members are encouraged to run off the floor for these positions also. Every member should attend and cast his vote. Likewise, elections to become members of the C&A Board will be held at the following meeting on June 3rd. This is a change from past procedures when C&A elections were held the first meeting of July. With these elections held in July, the C&A Board missed about a month of productive time as new officers left their positions on 1 July, but new officers werenít elected until mid July and not organized until August. More Board events need to occur this coming year than in the past to raise funds and meet our expenses. Your time, energy and help are needed. Please consider running for one of the positions. Step into the breach, and it can be fun and rewarding. Stand back, and we get passed by, both as individuals and as a Council. There are benefits to your stepping forward. Mostly, youíll make stronger friendships and reap the inner satisfaction found in helping and working with others. Finally, Iíd like to congratulate our fraternal benefits agent, Dennis Riley. Dennis has been awarded Agent of the Month in the Ulmer Agency, three times in the past 15 months. We have a great asset in Dennis, as many of you know. If you havenít taken advantage of his services, I would encourage you to do so. Congra-tulations Dennis, your great work is appreciated. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary be with each and every one of you.
Fraternally, Ken Dzombar Grand Knight

Knight of the Month | ||
It seems, at times, that this Knight may live at the barn. A Council officer, a member of the C&A Board of Directors, one of our few primary chefs for our catering events, a bingo team captain, and a brother intensely concerned with the welfare of the Council home. He supports the majority of our activities, with emphasis on our two primary fund raising activities, bingo and catering.
Family of the Month | ||
This husband and wife family team is one of the most continuously supportive members of our Council. He is a Council officer, a bingo captain, a third degree team member, notifies our non-third degree members about upcoming 2nd and 3rd degrees, handles name tag orders, stepped up to be our KOVAR chairman this year, when the previous chairman had to step down, and is a chair officer in our Fourth Degree Assembly. His lovely lady supports our bingo program every week as our cashier. A better cashier couldnít be found. She keeps the check-in line moving quickly. Our thanks goes out to our

Dear Brother Knightís | ||
AND THE GIANT WAS SMOTE WITH A LITTLE ROCK!
(paraphrase of the David and Goliath tale)
April Showers bring Kovar collectors. It is amazing what a few pennies can do. Of course, more than 190,000 pennies can do quite a lot. Kovar is always a fantastic weekend to look and see Christ in Action around the Barn. It really gives one a sense of pride to know that they belong to an Organization in which so many people give so much of their time to raise funds to help the mentally challenged. And, while doing so, they also engage in serious discussions.
I was at the barn on Saturday and spent some time talking with Rich Castellano, Todd Markulik, and Mike Zavala about whether Kovar should change its name because some find the term "retarded" offensive. No conclusions were reached but a good disccussion ensued. GaryBall chimed in his opinion that there be more hot dogs and they should be delivered to the collection stations. We allnoted his intellectual contribution to the discussion.
Speaking of Todd "That ain't trash, that's a quarter" Markulik, he and his lovely bride Chris coordinated another successful yard sale. Strategically placed at the end of the Little League parade, it brought gobs and gobs of people into the Barn's parking lot. Great event. As soon as he let's me know who else participated, I give them the appropriate kudos.
Speaking of kudos, as program director, I'll steal a little of the Worthy's thunder. Loudoun County has named the Council as the Volunteer Citizen of the Year. An anonymous application was sent on behalf of the Council and the Board of Supervisors thought that the Council should be honored for its extraordinary track record for volunteerism in the County. There will be a reception and awards ceremony on May 5, 1999 at the Board of Supervisors' Room at the CountyAdmin Building at 11:00 am. All brothers and their families are invited to attend. The Worthy may even give a speech.
I have it a from a confidential source that the Mardi Gras Dinner Dance was runner up for the Council activity of the year at the State Convention. Congrats to the Stapors and Finleys on job well done. next year, the big prize. I'll have a better report of the convention next month.
Next month is another biggie here at the Barn. The May Crowning is the first weekend. Love to have all in attendance for Mass. We also have to finish up our activities for Kovar with the Scout car wash on May 1. Mother's Day is again our BIG, COLLASSAL, and HUGE Mother's Day Brunch. Dr. D and his noble band of egg crackers are planning a scrumptious feast. Come and give Mom the day off.
Most importantly for May, let's talk C&A. Pat and Leo have done a great job booking the facility for a phenomenal number of weekends in a row. I ask everyone to see if they can give just three hours over the next four months to help us serve the community a little better. AND put Herndonfest on your calendar. It will be the first weekend in June given the late Memorial Day; however, it is never to early to plan. The Stuntman Winters and Mike Leddy are once again leading thetroops into battle. See them and sign up.
